Moving Your Baby to Their Own Room: A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents
One of the most emotional milestones for parents is deciding when to move your baby to their own room. It often comes with mixed emotions and excitement about creating their own space, pride in their growing independence, and, naturally, some nerves about how it will go.
If you’re a parent of a 6-month-old (or close to it), you may be wondering whether now is the right time. You’re not alone in this difficult but with the right preparation, transitioning your baby to their own room can be a positive and even joyful experience for all of you.
I ended up moving my son to his own room when we sought sleep help when he was 15 months old. This was mostly because I was anxious about how the transition would go. It was so much easier that I thought it would be but mainly because I had the guiding hand of Jenna of Little Dreams Consulting to help us get there confidently.
When Should You Move Your Baby to Their Own Room?
Parents often ask, “What’s the right age to move a baby into their own room?”
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every family is different, and you should make this change when it feels right for you.
According to The Lullaby Trust, babies should sleep in your room for at least the first six months, as this lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). After six months, however, it’s perfectly fine to wait longer if that works better for your family.
Not ready yet? Try small adjustments
If you’re not prepared for a full transition, you can make small steps:
- Place your baby’s cot further from your bed.
- Use a screen or divider to create a sense of separate space paying attention to safety.
- These small changes can help reduce disturbances while keeping your baby close by.
Why Move Your Baby to Their Own Room?
There are some surprising benefits to making the move when you feel ready:
- Better sleep for both baby and parents – Babies are easily disturbed by light, noise, movement and even your smell. Having their own space often helps them settle more deeply (and helps you sleep better too).
- Encourages independence – While your little one won’t remember the milestone, this step helps them get comfortable sleeping on their own, setting the stage for healthy sleep habits as they grow.
- Keep in mind: Moving your baby isn’t a cure or night wakings or nap struggles. Other factors (like sleep associations or developmental changes) may play a role.
How to Transition Your Baby to Their Own Room
If you’re feeling nervous about the change, here are practical tips to make the baby room transition smoother:
- Create a Calm, Familiar Sleep Space.
Your baby’s new room should be safe and soothing.
- Follow safe sleep guidelines like advice given by The lullaby Trust : no loose bedding, bumpers, or toys in the cot.
- Maintain a consistent room temperature (16–20°C).
- Use blackout blinds to keep the room dark.
- Bring familiar items, like a white noise machine, to provide continuity.
- Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine.
A predictable routine signals to your baby that it’s time to sleep. Try:
- Bath → Massage → Feed → Story → Sleep.
Start this before the move so the routine feels familiar in the new space.
- Start Small with Daytime Naps.
Not ready for overnight just yet? Begin with naps in the new room.
- Try nap-time in the new cot for a week.
- Spend positive time in the room (reading, changing nappies) to build comfort.
- Keep the cot for sleep only, not playtime.
- Stay Patient and Consistent.
It’s normal if the first few nights are bumpy, even for good sleepers.
- Stick to your usual routine.
- Avoid adding new sleep aids during the transition.
- Give it time, your baby will adapt.
A Big Step Worth Celebrating
Moving your baby to their own room is a big milestone, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to create a safe, special space just for them. It lays the groundwork for independent sleep and healthy habits for years to come.
