How to build a capsule wardrobe after having a baby

When you become a mum, you change and so does your style!

Your lifestyle looks very different to how it did before, which might leave you looking at your existing wardrobe in dismay. Perhaps it just doesn’t feel like you anymore? Maybe it’s got too much formal workwear in there? Or perhaps there’s some items that just don’t fit you the same way now?

Whatever the reason to want to overhaul your wardrobe, now is the perfect time to do so!

But “I don’t want to spend lots of money on new clothes when my body is still changing” I hear you say… and I’m not proposing that you do! Now is the perfect time to create a capsule wardrobe to see you through the months ahead – less items, maximum outfits and fully functional pieces that you’ll wear every day!

What’s a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a multitude of outfits for any occasion.

Not only does a capsule wardrobe help simplify your morning routine, but it also promotes sustainability by reducing excessive consumption.

In this post, we’ll explore the step-by-step process of building your perfect capsule wardrobe for after you’ve had a baby…

Look At Your Lifestyle:

Before embarking on the journey of creating your capsule wardrobe, take some time to evaluate your lifestyle. Consider your daily activities and social commitments. What pieces will ensure my wardrobe is functional? Do I need to consider breastfeeding friendly options? Do I need versatile pieces that will be suitable for playdates but allow me to also meet other mums for lunch?

Thinking about your lifestyle right now will help you determine the types of clothing items you need the most!

Declutter What No Longer Serves You:

Begin by decluttering your existing wardrobe. Take everything out and assess each item honestly. Keep only the pieces that fit you well and will serve you over the coming months. Anything else, either donate to charity, sell on apps like Vinted, or if you’re not quite ready to part with something, box it up and assess it another time. We only want your capsule wardrobe to consist of pieces that are right for you right now.

Identify The Gaps In Your Wardrobe:

Whilst your going through your existing pieces, write down a shopping list of what is missing that you really need. What staples do you not have? What layers do you need to bring your outfits together? What accessories are missing that will enable you to dress items up or down depending on what your day looks like?

The trick is to only put what you love back in the wardrobe and when you’re assessing pieces, check that they pair with what you’ve already decided to keep. A true capsule wardrobe all connects beautifully together, making deciding what to wear effortless.

And remember, a capsule wardrobe consists of one of every staple… one trouser, one jean, one dress, one skirt etc and then you add the layers and accessories on top of that.

Start Shopping For Those Perfect Missing Pieces:

Now for the fun part… you’ve identified what you really need and it’s time to fill those gaps. Head to the shops to try pieces on and make sure the fit is perfect. I recommend setting aside a few hours of me time to really focus on this, that way you can get it all done in one go and enjoy it.

Invest in Quality and Versatility:

When building a capsule wardrobe, quality should be prioritised over quantity. Invest in well-made, durable pieces that will stand the test of time. Look for fabrics that are easy to care for and versatile in different weather conditions. Choose classic silhouettes that transcend trends and opt for timeless designs that will not go out of style. And make sure everything is YOUR style – colours that are perfect for your skin tone, cuts that make you feel your most confidence self, and pieces that really make you smile.

Seek the Guidance of a Capsule Wardrobe Consultant:

If you feel overwhelmed or unsure about creating your own capsule wardrobe, consider seeking the guidance of a professional capsule wardrobe consultant.
